BARCELONA, Spain, April 13 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Alize Cornet held her serve just once Monday in suffering a first-round loss at the $220,000 Barcelona Ladies Open tennis tournament in Spain.
Cornet won 35 percent of the points on her own serve and was broken in six of seven service games during a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Stephanie Cohen-Aloro. The rout could have been worse but Cohen-Aloro got fewer than half of her first serves in.
Second-seeded Flavia Pennetta played more to form, talking out Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-3 in a crisp 77 minutes at the clay-court tournament.
No. 7-seeded Sara Errani rallied from a set down and avoided an upset, advancing on a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Mathilde Johansson.
Also Monday, Lucie Safarova defeated Tsvetana Pironkova 6-1, 3-6, 6-0; Magdalena Rybarikova stopped Klara Zakopalova 6-1, 7-6 (9-7); and Roberta Vinci beat Pauline Parmentier 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) to earn a second-round match with Pennetta.
The tournament continues until Sunday when the champion will be awarded $37,000.
