MONTE CARLO, Monaco, April 12 (UPI) -- Spain's Tommy Robredo, the 11th seed, was among players advancing with first-round victories Sunday in the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters.
Robredo eliminated Rainer Schuettler of Germany 6-1, 6-4.

Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, seeded 13th, was another seeded player to move on to the second round after posting a 6-2, 6-3 win over Serbian Viktor Troicki.
In other opening-round matches, Italy's Simone Bolelli downed Swede Robin Soderling 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 and German Philipp Kohlschreiber topped Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-1, 6-3.
The top eight seeds -- including No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who has won the tournament four years in a row, and No. 2 Roger Federer -- received first-round byes.
