ANAHEIM, Calif., April 11 (UPI) -- Howie Kendrick's two-run single in the second gave Los Angeles an early three-run lead Friday and the Angels went on to record a somber 6-3 victory over Boston.
The Angels played for the first time since the shocking death of pitcher Nick Adenhart, who was one of three people killed in a car crash early Thursday. Adenhart's death came after he had made his season debut on the mound Wednesday.
The Los Angeles-Oakland game scheduled for Thursday was postponed. There was a moment of silence and a video tribute to Adenhart on the big scoreboard before the game.
Los Angeles nursed a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning, and then tacked on three more thanks in part to a two-run single from Jeff Mathis.
Jered Weaver (1-0) got the win, allowing a run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings. Scot Shields pitched 1 1/3 inning in relief to get a save.
Tim Wakefield (1-0) went six innings for the Red Sox, surrendering three runs on six hits.
