
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 10 (UPI) -- Scottie Upshall and Peter Mueller had a goal and assist apiece Thursday, leading the Phoenix Coyotes to a 4-1 win over San Jose.
The Sharks had already clinched the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs after the Detroit Red Wings lost 4-3 in a shootout with Nashville Thursday. With 117 points and one regular-season game remaining, the Sharks have an insurmountable lead over Detroit, which has 112 points and two games left on the schedule.
Zbynek Michalek and Ed Jovanovski scored goals and Al Montoya was 40-of-41 in goal for Phoenix, which broke a two-game losing streak.
Travis Moen scoreda goal and Evgeni Nabokov let in four goals on 17 shots for San Jose, which came into the game with a two-game winning streak.
Upshall opened the scoring at 9:30 of the first period and Jovanovski scored what turned out to be the decisive goal with 19 seconds remaining in the first.
