OTTAWA, April 9 (UPI) -- New Jersey beat Ottawa 3-2 on Brendan Shanahan's shootout goal Thursday and the Devils clinched the Atlantic Division title for the third time in four seasons.

New Jersey got the point it needed to seize the division championship when the game went into overtime.

Brian Gionta and Brian Rolston scored the Devils' goals in regulation and Martin Brodeur made 28 saves.

Dany Heatley and Jarkko Ruutu posted the Senators' goals and Alex Auld turned away 30 shots.

Ottawa will miss the playoffs for the first time since the 1995-96 season.
