ANAHEIM, Calif., April 9 (UPI) -- Mark Ellis drove in the go-ahead run as part of a late and improbable rally Wednesday, boosting Oakland past the Los Angeles Angels 6-4.
Los Angeles owned a 4-0 lead going into the eighth, but the Athletics produced three runs in that inning -- two of them coming on a two-out single by Ryan Sweeney.
With Brian Fuentes (0-1) on the mound for the Angels in the ninth, Oakland had pinch-runner Bobby Crosby on first and two out before producing four consecutive singles that gave the Athletics the lead.
Kurt Suzuki reached on an infield hit and pinch-hitter Nomar Garciaparra then singled in Crosby to tie the game. An infield single by Ellis brought in Suzuki from third and Matt Holliday added another single that delivered Garciaparra for a 6-4 advantage.
The comeback made a winner out of Andrew Bailey (1-0), who worked the eighth inning. Brad Ziegler pitched the ninth for his second save.
