
CINCINNATI, April 9 (UPI) -- A three-run double by Briant Schneider gave New York a five-run cushion in the seventh inning Wednesday and the Mets fought off Cincinnati 9-7.
Carlos Delgado contributed a two-run homer and had four RBI in helping the Mets win for the second time in as many games to start the season.
Mike Pelfrey (1-0) picked up the victory, giving up four runs on five hits in five innings. Francisco Rodriguez came on in the ninth to protect a two-run lead and did so despite walking two batters.
Rodriguez earned his second shaky save in as many appearances.
Joey Votto went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer in the first inning that briefly put the Reds in front.
The loss went to Edinson Volquez (0-1), who coughed up five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.
