TORONTO, April 8 (UPI) -- Miguel Cabrera hit two home runs Wednesday, one of them a three-run shot in the first inning, carrying Detroit to a 5-1 victory over Toronto.

All the Tigers runs came thanks to the long ball, giving them their first win of the season. Detroit prevented the Blue Jays from recording what would have been their first 3-0 start in 13 years.

Cabrera added a solo shot in the fifth and Brandon Inge contributed a blast in the sixth.

Zach Miner (1-0), who earned a spot in the Detroit rotation last year after opening the 2008 season in the bullpen, allowed a run on five hits through 5 2/3 innings. Miner made 45 relief appearances last season before joining the rotation, where he was 5-2 in 13 starts.

Three relievers combined for 3 1/3 hitless innings, shutting down the Blue Jays after they had scored 17 runs in the first two games of the series.

Jesse Litsch (0-1) gave up all five runs on seven hits in six innings.
