BALTIMORE, April 8 (UPI) -- Nick Markakis helped stake Baltimore to a five-run lead Wednesday and the Orioles held on in the ninth to down the New York Yankees 7-5.

The Orioles have defeated the Yankees in their two meetings to open the season.

Markakis went 3-for-3, including a two-run homer that came during a five-run fourth inning.

Koji Uehara (1-0) made his major league debut and got the win by limiting the Yankees to a run on five hits in five innings. After Dennis Sarfate gave up three New York runs in the ninth, George Sherrill came on to record the final out and pick up a save.

Derek Jeter hit a two-run homer in the ninth to bring the Yankees within 7-4 and Mark Teixeira had a run-scoring double with two away. It was Teixeira's first hit in nine at-bats after signing a $180 million deal over the winter.

Hideki Matsui, representing the tying run, then popped out to third to end the game.

The loss went to Chien-Ming Wang (0-1), who gave up seven runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. Relievers Edwar Ramirez, Jonathan Albaladejo and Jose Veras did not give up a hit the rest of the way.
