U.S. Open runner-up wins Spain opener

MARBELLA, Spain, April 7 (UPI) -- Women's U.S. Open runner-up Jelena Jankovic was an opening-round winner Tuesday at the inaugural Andalucia Tennis Experience in Spain.

The second-seeded Jankovic defeated Italian Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-1.

Three other seeds joined Jankovic in the second round: No. 4 Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues beat Belarusian Anastasiya Yakimova 6-1, 6-3; No. 5 Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro beat Estonian Maret Ani 7-5, 7-5; and No. 6 Italian Sara Errani beat German Julia Schruff 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

Also, Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain defeated Italian Tathiana Garbin 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
