
ANAHEIM, Calif., April 7 (UPI) -- Howie Kendrick hit a solo homer and Joe Saunders held Oakland to three hits in 6 2/3 innings Monday when the LA Angels beat the Athletics 3-0.
Kendrick also stroked an RBI single and Vladimir Guerrero had an RBI for the Angels.
Saunders (1-0) struck out two and walked two. Angels' relievers Jose Arredondo, Scot Shields and Brian Fuentes held Oakland hitless over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Dallas Braden (0-1) started and went six innings for the A's, allowing three runs on nine hits.
Orlando Cabrera doubled, while Matt Holliday and Eric Chavez each stroked a singled for Oakland. Jack Cust walked twice.
The Angels scored twice in the third inning when Jeff Mathis had a lead-off single, Chone Figgins drew a walk and Kendrick drove both of them in with a single to right. Kendrick tagged Braden for the solo homer in the fifth.
