DETROIT, April 7 (UPI) -- Ty Lawson led North Carolina with 21 points Monday and the Tar Heels beat Michigan State 89-72 to win their fifth NCAA basketball championship.
Lawson -- the ACC Player of the Year -- also had six assists and a championship-game record eight steals. Wayne Ellington scored 19 points and Tyler Hansbrough had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Tar Heels -- who forced 21 turnovers by the Spartans in front of a title-game record crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field in Detroit.
Ellington was named the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player.
Goran Suton led the Spartans (31-7) with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Tar Heels, who beat Michigan State by 35 points in December, overpowered the Spartans in the first half when they scored a record 55 points to take a 21-point lead. The Spartans cut the margin to 13 points in the second half but were never really in contention after the opening minutes of the game.
Carolina (34-4) won its second national title under Coach Roy Williams and its fifth overall -- tying Indiana for third place all-time behind UCLA, which has won 11 titles, and Kentucky, which has seven.
