MLB: N.Y. Mets 2, Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, April 6 (UPI) -- Daniel Murphy homered and drove two runs Monday, delivering the New York Mets a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Johan Santana (1-0) worked the first 5 2/3 innings to earn the win for New York, allowing one run on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

J.J. Putz, acquired from Seattle, worked around a walk in the eighth inning and Francisco Rodriguez, who set a single-season saves record of 62 last year with the Los Angeles Angels, set down the side in order in the ninth for the save.

Brandon Phillips drove in the lone run for Cincinnati, which is coming off its eighth straight losing season. Aaron Harang (0-1) pitched five innings and took the loss after allowing one run on seven hits with three walks.
