Austrian advances at U.S. Men's Clay Court

HOUSTON, April 6 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer was a first-round winner Monday at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston.

Melzer defeated American Robert Kendrick 6-1, 7-5.

This week's top seeds here are Americans James Blake and Mardy Fish. Blake, last year's runner-up to Spaniard Marcel Granollers, will open play this week against Argentine Guillermo Canas. Fish, the 2006 Houston champion, will meet German Bjorn Phau.
