NEWARK, N.J., April 4 (UPI) -- The New Jersey Devils have lost backup goalie Kevin Weekes for up to three weeks because of an apparent leg injury, which the team called a lower-body injury.
The Devils said Saturday Weekes was injured when his left leg bent awkwardly as he went to his knees to cover the puck in the second-period of Friday's 5-4 overtime victory against Tampa Bay. He was replaced by Martin Brodeur and had to be helped to the locker room by team staff members.
"You guys probably couldn't hear it, but we could hear from the ice when he went (down)," Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner told reporters. "There was a little bit of a yell."
The Bergen (N.J.) Record said Weekes left the Prudential Center Friday without speaking.
The Devils said Weekes' injury is not expected to be serious, but test results are pending.
The Atlantic Division-leading Devils have recalled goalie Scott Clemmensen from Lowell of the American Hockey League to fill Weekes' roster spot.
