EDMONTON, Alberta, April 3 (UPI) -- Evgeni Nabokov allowed only a second-period goal Thursday and San Jose equaled the team's single-season victory record with a 2-1 win over Edmonton.
Nabokov made 24 saves in lifting the Sharks to their 51st triumph of the season, tying a franchise record set two years ago.
San Jose also moved six points in front of Detroit for the best record in the Western Conference and stayed three points ahead of Boston for the best record in the NHL. The Sharks, Red Wings and Bruins all have five games remaining.
Edmonton remained three points out of a playoff position in the West with four games to play.
It took only 52 seconds for Jonathan Cheechoo to put San Jose in front and Dan Boyle made it a 2-0 game at 8:16 of the second period.
Edmonton's only goal came from Sam Gagner on the power play with 1:42 left in the second.
