GLENDALE, Ariz., April 3 (UPI) -- Scottie Upshall scored with 5:54 to play in the third period Thursday, giving the Phoenix Coyotes a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles.

In a meeting of teams out of the playoff chase, the Coyotes moved two points ahead of the Kings in their fight to stay out of the Pacific Division cellar.

Los Angeles entered the third period with a 1-0 lead but Ed Jovanovski tied it 6:08 into the stanza. Jovanovski then assisted on Upshall's goal.

Al Montoya had to make just 16 saves to win his second game in as many NHL starts. His first start came Wednesday, when he made 23 saves and shut out Colorado.

Montoya was called up from the American Hockey League last week.
