Stallworth booked on manslaughter charge
MIAMI, April 2 (UPI) -- Cleveland Browns receiver Donte Stallworth surrendered to authorities in Miami Thursday to face a DUI manslaughter charge in a crash that killed a pedestrian.
Stallworth made a brief court appearance before being led away in handcuffs for processing at the jail, The Miami Herald reported.
Stallworth, 28, is charged in the death of Mario Reyes, who was struck and killed March 14 as he crossed a Miami Beach street in front of the NFL player's Bentley. Court documents filed Wednesday said blood tests revealed Stallworth had a blood alcohol level of 0.12 percent after the accident. Florida's legal limit is 0.08 percent.
Stallworth told officers he flashed the lights of his Bentley when he saw Reyes, the newspaper said.
Stallworth's bond was set at $200,000. He will be allowed to live in both Florida and Ohio until the case goes to trial but must notify the court when he travels between the two states, the Herald said. He lists a Cleveland address, court documents said.
Under terms of his bond, Stallworth has a midnight-6 a.m. curfew and cannot drive. He also cannot have alcohol and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing through the National Football League's substance abuse program.
DUI manslaughter is a felony that has an indiscriminate prison sentence of four years to 15 years.
Hamilton's finish at Melbourne overturned
SEPANG, Malaysia, April 2 (UPI) -- Reigning Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has been disqualified from last Sunday's Australian Grand Prix for "misleading" information.
At the race in Melbourne, Hamilton, driving a McLaren Mercedes, crossed the finish line in fourth but was given a third-place finish ahead of Jarno Trulli (Toyota). Trulli had received a 25-second time penalty for passing Hamilton under the safety car during the race's closing laps.
During a hearing Thursday in Malaysia, the International Automobile Federation, the F1 governing body, investigated the incident after saying there was evidence that Hamilton and the McLaren team acted in a "manner prejudicial to the conduct of the event by providing deliberately misleading evidence" at a post-race hearing.
Lewis Hamilton and Vodafone McLaren Mercedes were "excluded from the race classification for the 2009 Australian Grand Prix and the classification is amended accordingly (and) Trulli's penalty has been withdrawn," the FIA said in a statement.
The Australian Grand Prix was won by Jenson Button for the Brawn GP team.
Iverson wants more playing time in Detroit
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 2 (UPI) -- Detroit Pistons guard Allen Iverson is angry about being made a bench player following a 16-game absence with a back injury.
Since his return on Feb. 25, the 12-year NBA veteran, a perennial all-star, has played sporadically off the Detroit bench behind Michael Curry.
After playing only 18 minutes in Tuesday's 79-73 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, he openly voiced his frustration.
"Eighteen minutes, c'mon, man," the volatile Iverson said. "I can play 18 minutes with my eyes closed, with a 100-pound truck on my back. That's a bad feeling. I'm wondering what the rush was to get me back. I mean, for that? It's a bad time for me mentally (but) I'm looking at the big picture."
The 2001 NBA MVP has a career per-game scoring average of 27.1 points, but in 54 games this season, Iverson has averaged 17.5 points per contest.
He was acquired from Denver last season for the popular Chauncey Billups.
Twins place three on disabled list
FORT MYERS, Fla., April 2 (UPI) -- Minnesota pitcher Scott Baker, who was to have started Opening Day for the Twins, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday.
The Twins said the roster move was retroactive to March 28. Pitcher Boof Bonser and catcher Joe Mauer were also placed in the 15-day disabled list.
Baker, a right-hander, had been announced as the starting pitcher for Minnesota's season opener Monday against the Seattle Mariners. But stiffness in his right shoulder during an outing Wednesday against Triple-A Norfolk caused the Twins to make a roster move. He was 1-2 with a 6.85 earned run average in six spring training appearances.
Left-handed pitcher Francisco Liriano was given the Opening Day starting assignment in place of Baker.
Bonser was placed on the DL following surgery to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder. Mauer has been bothered by inflammation in his sacroiliac joint.
