NHL: Phoenix 3, Colorado 0

DENVER, April 2 (UPI) -- Al Montoya recorded a shutout in his first NHL start Wednesday, making 23 saves in bringing Phoenix a 3-0 victory over Colorado.

In a meeting of the two worst teams in the Western Conference, the Coyotes handed the Avalanche their eighth straight loss.

Phoenix recalled Montoya from the American Hockey League last week and he came through with a solid performance against a team that has struggled to score goals this season.

Mikkel Boedker put Phoenix in front 6:28 into the game and it remained a 1-0 contest until Shane Doan put a slap shot past Andrew Raycroft 7:17 into the third. It was Doan's 30th goal of the season.

The Coyotes have won two straight.
