TORONTO, April 1 (UPI) -- Ian White scored the game-winning goal in the second period Wednesday and Curtis Joseph stopped 32 shots, giving Toronto a 3-2 win over Philadelphia.
The Maple Leafs won for the third time in five games, also getting goals from Jamal Mayers and Lee Tempniak.
Toronto, however, will miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year, the longest drought in the history of one of the original members of the NHL. The Maple Leafs have not won the Stanley Cup in 42 years.
Martin Biron started in goal for Philadelphia and allowed three goals on 28 shots. He was replaced by Antero Niittymaki after the second period and was perfect while facing 10 shots.
Philadelphia is tied for the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference with Pittsburgh at 92 points. The Flyers, who reached the Eastern Conference finals last year, are about to reach the playoffs again two years after having the worst record in the league.
The teams meet again Friday in Philadelphia.
