COL BKB: Oregon State 75, Texas-El Paso 69

CORVALLIS, Ore., March 31 (UPI) -- Roeland Schaftenaar had 19 points and Lathen Wallace 18 Monday when Oregon State beat Texas-El Paso 75-69 in the opener of the College Basketball Invitational.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be played Wednesday in El Paso.

Seth Tarver scored 17 points and Rickey Claitt finished with 13 points and six assists for the Beavers (17-17) -- who shot 68.4 percent from field in the second half.

Randy Culpepper led Texas-El Paso with 20 points. Stefon Jackson scored 17 and Arnett Moultrie finished with 16 points and six rebounds for the Miners (22-13).

Playing before a home crowd, the Beavers opened the game on a 9-0 run and led 35-29 at intermission. Oregon opened the second half with a 12-0 run.
