Pavelski's 23rd goal this season broke a 2-2 at the 1:34 mark. Jody Shelley (unassisted) and Tom Cavanagh scored in the second, and Evgeni Nabokov was credited with 25 saves on 27 shots for the Sharks, who stopped a two-game skid following a three-game winning streak.
San Jose rose to 109 points, two better than Detroit for the best record in the Western Conference and in the NHL overall.
Phoenix got second-period goals from Kurt Sauer and Matthew Lombardi.
Ilya Bryzgalov was beaten three times on 32 shots for the Coyotes, who have lost six in a row and are 14th in the West.
