ANAHEIM, Calif., March 28 (UPI) -- Dustin Penner scored twice Friday and the Edmonton Oilers shook up the Western Conference playoff race with a 5-3 victory over Anaheim.
Edmonton had lost three straight games to fall out of a playoff position, but Friday's victory jumped the Oilers from a tie for ninth place all the way to seventh in the tight battle for post-season spots.
Edmonton has 81 points, one more than Anaheim and Nashville, two more than St. Louis and three more than Minnesota. Anaheim had a five-game winning streak snapped.
The Oilers let a two-goal lead get away, but Penner's second score of the game, coming on the power play 2:40 deep in the second period, put Edmonton in front for good at 3-2.
Kyle Brodziak scored just 9 seconds later, making it 4-2 and driving Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere from the game. After allowing four goals on seven shots, Giguere was replaced by Jonas Hiller.
Hiller did not allow a goal, but after the Ducks rallied within 4-3 in the third period, Ales Kotalik scored into an empty net with 12 seconds left to clinch the victory.
Dwayne Roloson made 40 saves to get the win.
