INDIANAPOLIS, March 28 (UPI) -- A 3-point play by Kalin Lucas put Michigan State ahead with 48 seconds left Friday and the Spartans rallied past Kansas 67-62 in the NCAA regional semifinals.
The defending champion Jayhawks scored the game's first five points, led by as many as 13 in the first half and stayed in front for most of the contest. Second-seeded Michigan State, however, used its traditionally strong defense to reach the title game of the Midwest Region, where the Spartans will meet top seeded Louisville Sunday.
Lucas gave Michigan State a 63-60 lead with his 3-point play, which he created by hitting a leaning jumper as he was being fouled by Sherron Collins.
Third-seeded Kansas climbed within one on Tyshawn Taylor's two free throws with 32 seconds left and Lucas again gave the Spartans a three-point lead with two foul shots that came with 26 seconds remaining.
A missed free throw by Collins and a rebound by Michigan State's Travis Walton with 20 seconds left all but sealed Kansas' fate.
Goran Suton led Michigan State (28-6) with 20 points and Lucas had 18. The Spartans shot just 39 percent from the field, but made 16-of-17 from the line and forced six more turnovers than they committed.
Collins scored 20 for the Jay hawks (27-7) and Cole Aldrich had 17.
