
MIAMI, March 26 (UPI) -- Maria Kirilenko and Daniela Hantuchova were among those advancing past the first round Wednesday at the Sony Ericsson Open.
Kirilenko overcame Kateryna Bondarenko 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 and Hantuchova rallied to defeat Melanie Oudin 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In other matches on the opening day of the tournament, Francesca Schiavone outlasted Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, Nicole Vaidisova breezed past Patricia Mayr 6-4, 6-2 and Jelena Dokic defeated Edina Gallovits 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
None of the 32 seeded players were in action Wednesday, having received a bye past the first round.
Nuria Llagostera Vives, Mariya Koryttseva, Anastasiya Yakimova, Galina Voskoboeva, Anastasia Pivovarova and Lucie Safarova were among the other winners.
Serena Williams is the No. 1 seed and the two-time defending champion at this event. Venus Williams is seeded fifth.
