ATLANTA, March 25 (UPI) -- Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick left prison Wednesday and began the lengthy release process, officials told an Atlanta television station.

WSB-TV said an official with the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that Vick was likely on his way to Virginia, possibly to his own home.

Vick was sentenced to 23 months for animal fighting after a dog-fighting ring was broken up at his Virginia estate.

WSB said Vick was scheduled to remain in federal custody until July 20; however, he could be eligible for home custody or even early release.

Vick still has bankruptcy proceedings to contend with. He has an April 2 court date on that matter.
