TORONTO, March 24 (UPI) -- Jeff Hamilton scored the lone goal of an overtime shootout on the Leafs' first shot Tuesday, delivering Toronto a 3-2 win over Washington.

Toronto substitute goaltender Curtis Joseph stopped a shot by Alex Ovechkin to end the game.

Hamilton beat Jose Theodore with a wrist shot to open the shootout.

Pavel Kubina scored for Toronto and Phil Oreskovic tallied his first NHL goal for the Maple Leafs, who have won four of their last five games.

Toronto's starting goalie Martin Gerber made 34 stops before being ejected late in regulation. Joseph had nine saves -- eight in overtime -- to earn the win.

Ovechkin and Brooks Laich scored for the Capitals, who have lost two straight, but with the point earned for the shootout loss, drew into a tie for the second-seed in the NHL East with idle New Jersey.
