LEXINGTON, Ky., March 23 (UPI) -- Lil E. Tee, the long-shot winner of the 1992 Kentucky Derby, has been euthanized after failing to recover from surgery.
The 20-year-old horse was euthanized Wednesday at Old Frankfort Stud in Lexington, Ky., after he couldn't recover from an operation last month to remove a bowel obstruction.
The Pennsylvania-bred Lil E. Tee, with Pat Dye up, went off at 17-1 in the 1992 Kentucky Derby and defeated heavily favored Arazi. It was the lone Kentucky Derby win for Dye, a Hall of Fame jockey.
Lil E. Tee finished fifth in the Preakness Stakes and didn't race in the Belmont Stakes that year.
Lil E. Tee won seven of 13 career starts and more than $1.4 million in purses. He was retired after his 4-year-old season and was a stallion for Old Frankfort Stud.
