STORRS, Conn., March 22 (UPI) -- Tina Charles' 32 points Sunday sent top-ranked Connecticut to a 104-65 romp over Vermont in a first-round NCAA Tournament contest in Storrs.
The Huskies (34-0), the top seed in the Trenton Region, led 22-7 when Renee Montgomery sank a 3-pointer with 13:34 left in the first half and showed little rustiness despite a 12-day layoff.
With the win, UConn Coach Geno Auriemma passed former UNC men's coach Dean Smith on the all-time list with 66 NCAA Tournament victories.
Montgomery had 19 points and seven assists. Both Maya Moore and Kalana Greene scored 13, while 10 players scored for the Huskies, who scored at least 100 points in an NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in school history and are attempting to win their sixth national title.
They face either Temple or Florida Tuesday.
Courtnay Pilyaitis led the 16th-seeded Catamounts (21-12) with 24 points, four rebounds and four assists. Andrea Cihal added 10 with four rebounds.
