PORTO SANTO, Portugal, March 22 (UPI) -- Estanislao Goya claimed his first European Tour victory Sunday, winning the Madeira Islands Open in Portugal by a stroke over hard-charging Callum Macaulay.
Goya, of Argentina, closed with a 1-over-par 73 for a tournament total of 6-under 278.
Macaulay carded six straight birdies on the back nine, which he finished in 28 strokes for a 64 and a total of 5-under 279.
The 20-year-old Goya was the leading money-winner last season on the Latin American Tour.
"I am so happy to have made one of my dreams come true," Goya said after his narrow victory.
Macaulay, of Scotland, played in just his fifth event on the European Tour.
"I'm over the moon with (the final nine)," Macaulay said. "I certainly couldn't do any more than I did over the back because it's not an easy golf course."
Wil Besseling (69) and Damien McGrane (72) tied for third at 4-under 280.
