Report: Iowa player faces assault charge

IOWA CITY, Iowa, March 21 (UPI) -- Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn faces an assault charge for allegedly punching a cab driver in a January incident, authorities say.

Clayborn, 20, was arrested Thursday and charged with assault causing bodily injury based on allegations that he struck a cab driver Jan. 18, The Des Moines Register reported. He was released from the Johnson County Jail on his own recognizance, the newspaper said.

The criminal complaint said the cabbie honked at Clayborn after an accident in a residential area southeast of downtown Iowa City and then was punched in the face. He sustained minor injuries.

"I've been aware of this alleged incident since January, and consider it to be a serious situation," Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said in a news release. "I think it is best to let the due process run its course before coming to any judgment."

A police spokesman said the charge likely took two months to investigate because there were a large number of witnesses to interview.
