KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 21 (UPI) -- Tyreke Evans' 19 points Saturday led five Tigers in double figures in a 89-70 victory for Memphis over Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers, the second seed in the West Region, raced out to a 53-33 halftime bulge by sinking 70.4 percent of their shots and coasted.
Evans also had five assists and four rebounds. Robert Dozier scored 17 points with eight rebounds and Doneal Mack also scored 17 points (5-of-7 3-pointers).
Shawn Taggart had 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Roburt Sallie added 13 points and three rebounds for the Tigers, who advance to the Sweet 16 where they will play the winner of Sunday's West Regional contest in Boise, Idaho, between Marquette and Missouri.
Greivis Vasquez led Maryland with 18 points and five assists. Adrian Bowie scored 11 with three rebounds and Eric Hayes scored 10 points for the Terps (21-14), who shot 43.5 percent and sank only 11-of-19 free throw attempts.
Vazquez had fired up the Tigers by insulting their 16-0 record in Conference USA. In an interview Friday, he said Memphis would have "a losing record" in the ACC.
