NHL: Carolina 5, New York Islanders 4

RALEIGH, N.C., March 20 (UPI) -- Chad LaRose's second goal Friday led the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-4 win over the New York Islanders.

With the score tied 4-4, LaRose fired his 16th goal this season past New York netminder Peter Mannino at 15:39 of the third period. He had scored his 15th at 18:52 of the first.

Matt Cullen also scored twice, once on the power play, with one assist, giving him 22 goals.

Both Ray Whitney and Joe Corvo had three assists, while Cam Ward made 32 saves on 38 shots for the Hurricanes, who started the contest in a tie with Montreal for the final two post-season berths in the Eastern Conference.

The Islanders got goals from Frans Nielsen, Richard Park, Bruno Gervais and Kyle Okposo (power play), all in the second.

Mannino was beaten five times on 37 shots for the Islanders, who had won two of three.
