PORTO SANTO, Portugal, March 20 (UPI) -- Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey shot 5-under 66 Friday and holds a one-stroke lead after 36 holes at the Madeira Islands Open in Porto Santo, Portugal.

Hoey's round included six birdies and a bogey at the par-5 fourth hole. He is attempting to capture his first European Tour tournament victory.

"I have played well over both rounds," said the 2001 British Amateur champion. "I think I just made a few more putts (Friday). I didn't actually have to putt that well because I was hitting the ball so close."

Hoey's two-round total, 7-under 135, leads the trio of Michael McGeady (67), Estanislao Goya (68) and Joakim Haeggman (70). All three are 6-under 136, locked in a tie for second.

Carlos Rodiles (65) and Damien McGrane (72) share fifth place at 4-under 138.

Michael Jonzon (149), Andrew Coltart (150) and Simon Wakefield (150) were among those who missed the 6-over 148 cut line.
