
MIAMI, March 20 (UPI) -- Jonny Flynn scored 16 points and Paul Harris grabbed 16 rebounds Friday, lifting Syracuse to a 59-44 NCAA Tournament first-round win over Stephen F. Austin.
Arinze Onuaku and Rick Jackson each scored 12 points for the third-seeded Orange (27-9), who advanced to a second-round game Sunday against either Arizona State or Temple.
Stephen F. Austin saw its season end with a 24-8 record. Benson Akpan led the Lumberjacks with 12 points and 10 rebounds. But team leading scorer Matt Kingsley managed just 2 points and the Lumberjacks shot 24.7 percent from the floor.
Syracuse scored the first 6 points of each half. In the first half, the Orange went ahead 20-4 before Stephen F. Austin worked a little closer.
In the second half, Syracuse used a 12-2 run to go up 50-24. While the Lumberjacks had an 11-0 run, the Orange was able to push the advantage back to 20 points with 7 1/2 minutes to play and cruised to victory despite 12 second-half turnovers.
