
SOUTH BEND, Ind., March 19 (UPI) -- A layup by Tory Jackson with 2 seconds to play Thursday night allowed Notre Dame to escape with a 70-68 win over New Mexico in the NIT's second round.
The Fighting Irish (20-14) raced to a 20-6 lead, but New Mexico clawed back to take a six-point advantage with 2:08 to play on Dairese Gary's two free throws.
Notre Dame then ran off eight straight points and moved in front at 68-66 on two foul shots by Luke Harangody. The Lobos tied the game on a pair of foul shots by Gary with 8 seconds left, setting up Jackson's game-winning score.
Tony Dandridge got off a 3-point effort prior to the buzzer, but it rattled out.
Harangody scored 26 points, pushing Notre Dame into a third-round meeting with either Creighton or Kentucky. The Bluejays and Wildcats will meet in a second-round game Monday.
New Mexico (22-12) was led by Gary and Daniel Faris with 15 points each.
