KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 19 (UPI) -- Manny Harris led Michigan to a 15-point advantage with 6 minutes left Thursday and the Wolverines held on to defeat Clemson 62-59 in the NCAA Tournament.
The 10th-seeded Wolverines reached the second round of the South Region after an 11-year absence from the event.
Harris scored 23 points in helping Michigan build a 58-43 lead with time winding down. Clemson, however, cut its deficit to one with less than a minute to play.
The Michigan lead stood at two when the Wolverines' Zack Novak went to the foul line for two shots with 13 seconds. He made only one of the attempts, giving Clemson a chance to send the game into overtime.
K.C. Rivers missed his 3-point try with 2 seconds left and Stu Douglass claimed the rebound to secure the victory.
Douglass added 12 points for Michigan (21-13) and DeShawn Sims had nine.
Clemson (23-9) shot just 32 percent from the field and was led by Trevor Booker with 18 points. The Tigers played most of the second half without Terrence Oglesby, who was ejected with 17:20 to play after throwing an elbow.
Oglesby averaged 13.5 points a game this season but scored just three against Michigan. It is the second straight year Clemson has lost in the first round of the tournament to a lower-seeded opponent.
Villanova, seeded 12th, downed the Tigers last season.
