
MIAMI, March 14 (UPI) -- Miguel Cabrera snapped a fourth-inning tie Saturday with a solo homer and Venezuela beat Netherlands 3-1 in the second round of the World Baseball Classic.
Cabrera's bomb off losing pitcher Sidney Ponson (1-1) snapped a 1-1 tie and gave his team a lead it held until the final out. In its winning effort, Venezuela managed just three hits.
Jose Lopez hit a solo homer in the eighth and Endy Chavez tripled and scored on Melvin Mora's ground out in the first.
Winning pitcher Carlos Silva (1-0) gave up a run and four hits in seven innings. Francisco Rodriguez earned his second save of the WBC.
Netherlands went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Yurendell de Caster reached on an error but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Bryan Engelhardt's double, and Engelhardt scored on a Vince Rooi single.
Netherlands will play the loser of Saturday night's United States-Puerto Rico matchup in an elimination contest Sunday.
