No. 1 UNC loses in ACC Tournament

ATLANTA, March 14 (UPI) -- Toney Douglas scored a game-high 27 points Saturday, fueling Florida State's 73-70 upset of No. 1 North Carolina in an ACC Tournament semifinal in Atlanta.

Both Douglas and Derwin Kitchen (11 points) sank two free throws in the closing 48 seconds to lead FSU into its first title game Sunday against No. 8 Duke, which beat Maryland 67-61 in Saturday's other semifinal game.

Kitchen's 3-pointer started Florida State's game-ending heroics and led to a 58-55 advantage with 9:33 remaining. Douglas also had four rebounds and four assists.

Kitchen added nine rebounds and six assists, while Solomon Alabi scored 11 with five rebounds for the fourth-seeded Seminoles (25-8).

Wayne Ellington led top-seeded UNC with 24 points, four rebounds and three assists. Tyler Hansbrough scored 22 with 11 rebounds and five steals, while Deon Thompson had 12 points and five rebounds for the Tar Heels (28-4), who were denied a chance to gain its third straight tournament crown.

Jon Scheyer scored 22 points to lead Duke past Maryland. Kyle Singler added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Blue Devils (27-6), who will be seeking their 17th ACC tournament championship, and their first since 2006.

Eric Hayes scored 20 points for the Terrapins (20-13), who beat N.C. State and Wake Forest to reach the semifinals. Greivis Vasquez had 14 points, six rebounds and four assists for Maryland, which was trying to reach its first conference final since winning the title in 2004.
