NHL: N.Y. Islanders 3, Montreal 2 (OT)

MONTREAL, March 12 (UPI) -- Kyle Okposo needed just 26 seconds of overtime Thursday night to fire a slapshot past Carey Price, giving the New York Islanders a 3-2 win over Montreal.

It was the first loss for new Montreal Coach Bob Gainey, who stepped down from the general manager's office to replace the dismissed Guy Carbonneau this week.

Montreal had defeated Edmonton in overtime Tuesday in Gainey's debut.

The Islanders took a 2-1 lead 51 seconds into the third period on a power-play goal from Frans Nielsen, but Tom Kostopoulos tied it nine minutes later.

Yann Danis made 24 saves for the Islanders, who have long been out of playoff contention and reside in last place in the Atlantic Division.

The victory was the Islanders' first on the road in eight tries and their second in 23 games.
