CHICAGO, March 12 (UPI) -- Kris Versteeg scored in the fourth round of an overtime shootout Wednesday, giving Chicago a 3-2 victory over Carolina.
The first three rounds ended in a 2-2 tie before Versteeg beat Cam Ward just under the crossbar. Sergei Samsonov was then stopped by Cristobal Huet to give Chicago its first victory over the Hurricanes in a decade.
Chicago had lost five out of seven coming into the contest. Huet made 29 saves for his 19th win of the year.
One of Carolina's goals came from Rod Brind'Amour, who scored for the third straight game. It was only the third loss for the Hurricanes in 11 outings.
Carolina forced overtime when Tuomo Ruutu scored with 27 seconds left in regulation.
It was the 900th game as coach of the Blackhawks for Joel Quenneville.
