INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 12 (UPI) -- Edina Gallovits pulled off a three-set surprise victory over Maria Kirilenko Thursday in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif.

First-round action came to a close with 16 matches -- none of which involved a seeded player.

Kirilenko won three times on the WTA circuit last season, but she was not among the 32 players seeded for this tournament. She was ousted in the opening round by Gallovits 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Samantha Stosur advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Francesca Schiavone and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Marta Domachowska. Pavlyuchenkova will face former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic in the second round.

Other winners Thursday included Tamira Paszek, Anastasiya Yakimova, Karin Knapp and Sania Mirza.

Dinara Safina holds down the No. 1 seed in the tournament, followed by Jankovic and Elena Dementieva.
