INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 11 (UPI) -- Jill Craybas pulled off the biggest surprise on the opening day of the BNP Paribas Open Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jelena Dokic.

The first day of the 12-day tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden featured 16 matches, none of which involved the 32 seeded players. Dokic was an unexpected quarterfinalist at this year's Australian Open, but she could not survive against the veteran American.

Among other first-day winners were Shahar Peer, Time Bacsinszky, Tsvetana Pironkova, Ekaterina Makarova and Anna-Lena Grenefeld.

Dinara Safina, the runner-up in Australia, is seeded No. 1 in this event. Jelena Jankovic, Elena Dementieva, Vera Zvonareva and Ana Ivanovic round out the top five seeded players, all of whom receive a bye into the second round.

Neither Venus nor Serena Williams will take part in the tournament.

The men's portion of the event will begin Thursday and is the first of the season's Masters tourneys.
