CHAPEL HILL, N.C., March 8 (UPI) -- Tyler Hansbrough's 17 points and eight rebounds Sunday led No. 2 North Carolina to a 79-71 win over No. 7 Duke and the ACC regular-season title.
The 6-foot-9 inch forward, playing for the last time at the Dean Smith Center, sank 2-of-3 3-pointers in the first half, a shot he rarely attempts, to fire up a home audience, which included former UNC and Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan.
Ty Lawson, nursing a sprained toe, scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half with nine assists and eight rebounds.
Wayne Ellington scored 16 points and Deon Thompson scored 14 with five rebounds for the Tar Heels (27-3, 13-3), who have won 13 of their last 14 contests and captured their third outright ACC crown in five years.
Jon Scheyer led Duke with 24 points, five assists and four rebounds. Kyle Singler had 23 points and six rebounds, while Gerald Henderson added 14 points, four rebounds and three assists for the seventh-ranked Blue Devils (25-6, 11-5), who had won five in a row.
