TORONTO, March 7 (UPI) -- The United States used three home runs Saturday to beat Canada 6-5 in a first-round contest in Toronto at the World Baseball Classic.
The last of the big flies was a two-run sixth-inning blast by Washington's Adam Dunn, which gave the U.S. team a 6-3 lead. Boston's Kevin Youkilis hit a solo homer and Atlanta's Brain McCann hit a two-run shot, both in the bottom of the fourth.
McCann also hit a second-inning sacrifice fly.
The New York Yankees' Derek Jeter and Philadelphia's Shane Victorino both had two hits.
The winner was Houston's LaTroy Hawkins (1-0), the second of seven U.S. pitchers.
New York Mets' closer J.J. Putz recorded a save.
Canada's Joey Votto (Cincinnati Reds), a Toronto native, went 4-for-5 with a solo homer in the third and an RBI double in the ninth. Russell Martin (LA Dodgers) also had a solo homer among three runs and two hits.
The losing pitcher was starter Mike Johnson (0-1).
