WBC: Netherlands 3, Dom. Republic 2

SAN JUAN, Dominican Republic, March 7 (UPI) -- The Netherlands scored all of its runs in the first inning Saturday and went on to stun the Dominican Republic 3-2 at the World Baseball Classic in San Juan.

The eventual winning run in the first-round contest scored on a two-out throwing error by shortstop Hanley Ramirez (Florida Marlins).

One run scored on a wild pitch by losing pitcher Edinson Volquez (Cincinnati Reds) and the other on a single by Sharnol Adriana before Ramirez's error.

Winning pitcher Sidney Ponson (1-0) yielded two earned runs and three hits in four innings, while Leon Boyd got a save despite walking two batters in the bottom of the ninth.

The heavily-favored Dominicans scored on Miguel Tejada's solo fourth-inning homer, and Ramirez's fifth-inning sacrifice fly.

Volquez (0-1) gave up three unearned runs and two hits in three innings.
