Spain leads Serbia 2-1 at Davis Cup

BENIDORM, Spain, March 7 (UPI) -- Spain used a victory by world No. 1 Rafael Nadal Saturday to take a 2-1 lead over Serbia in their first-round Davis Cup matchup at Benidorm, Spain.

The sides were forced to play three of their five matches Saturday after two scheduled for Friday were postponed because 55 mph winds damaged the temporary 14,000-seat Benidorm Stadium.

Spain took a quick 1-0 advantage when David Ferrer surprised Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

The lead went to 2-0 courtesy of Nadal's 6-1, 6-0, 6-2 rout of Janko Tipsarevic.

Serbia closed to 2-1 when Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic recorded a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) doubles win over Feliciano Lopez and Tommy Robredo.

Sunday, Nadal faces Djokovic and, if necessary, Tipsarevic goes against Ferrer.

The eventual winner will play either Germany or Austria in July's quarterfinals.
