Germany leads Austria 2-1 at Davis Cup

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany, March 7 (UPI) -- A doubles victory by Nicolas Kiefer and Philipp Kohlschreiber Saturday gave Germany a 2-1 Davis Cup advantage over Austria.

The Germans can wrap up the best-of-five first-round Davis Cup tie Sunday at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, with a victory in one of two scheduled singles matches.

The three-time Davis Cup champion Germans are 4-0 all-time against the Austrians.

Kiefer and Kohlschreiber downed Julian Knowle and Alexander Peya 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-4 Saturday.

Kohlschreiber replaced Christopher Kas because of his experience, while Peya stepped in for Jurgen Melzer.

Sunday's reverse singles pit Schuettler against Melzer and Kohlschreiber against Stefan Koubek.

The Germany-Austria winner faces either Spain or Serbia in July's quarterfinals.

Spain has a surprising 2-1 advantage over Serbia.
