
RALEIGH, N.C., March 6 (UPI) -- Ray Whitney scored Carolina's first and last goals Friday night as part of his third NHL career hat trick, boosting the Hurricanes to a 6-1 win over Calgary.
All three Whitney goals came on the power play, helping Carolina win for the sixth time in eight games. Cam Ward got the victory with 21 saves.
Whitney opened the scoring with 5:09 to play in the first period and Sergei Samsonov and Erik Cole added goals before the end of the stanza. Whitney made it 4-0 midway through the second and completed the hat trick with his 21st goal of the season at 4:08 of the third.
Jarome Iginla ended Ward's bid for a shutout with 3:49 to play in the game. Carolina is one point out of a playoff position in the Eastern Conference.
Curtis McElhinney allowed all six goals on 33 shots.
