PHOENIX, March 3 (UPI) -- The agent for baseball home run king Barry Bonds says he has been given the go-ahead to contact clubs that might be interested in signing the former star.
Bonds, whose federal perjury and obstruction of justice trial has been indefinitely delayed, Monday gave agent Jeff Borris permission to drum up interest from major league teams that might be interested in resurrecting the 44-year-old slugger's career, USA Today reported.
"Due to the fact that Barry's trial has been delayed an indefinite period of time," Borris told the newspaper from Arizona, where many teams are conducting spring training. "I will be making the rounds this week to see if there's any interest in Barry playing for the 2009 season."
Bonds has not seen major league action since 2007, when he hit 28 homers for the San Francisco Giants, breaking Hank Aaron's all-time home run record by reaching 762 for his career.
Borris said he's not optimistic he'll find any takers for Bonds, who has been dogged by allegations he used banned performance-enhancing substances during his career. Bonds contends baseball owners have colluded to prevent him from returning to the game, a charge Major League Baseball denies, USA Today reported.
